What We Eat May Significantly Impact Brain Health

The old cliché “you are what you eat” rings especially true when it comes to brain health. Now, a new study shows that what you eat can have a direct impact on your brain, including the amount of grey matter you have, which is the part of the brain that processes information and performs cognitive functions.

For a study published in the journal Nature, researchers at the University of Warwick looked at food preference data from 181,990 individuals participating in the UK Biobank. They divided the participants’ food preferences into four categories: starch-free (or reduced starch), vegetarian, high protein low fiber, and balanced.

What they found is that those who were eating a balanced diet had better brain function and mental health than those eating the other three types of diets. They also had higher amounts of grey matter in their brains than those who were eating a less balanced diet.

The researchers also noted a significant link between food choices and mental health. Vegetarian eaters who ate more fruits and vegetables had fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression and better mental well-being. They also found that those who were eating a high protein, low fiber diet had lower mental well-being scores than those eating the other types of diets. Plus, they had an increased risk of strokes.

“Greenwashing”: What It Is and How to Avoid It

Have you ever felt tricked by “greenwashing” without even realizing it? Greenwashing is essentially a deceptive practice that runs rampant among food, supplement, and cosmetics manufacturers to make their products look and sound healthier and more eco-friendly than they actually are. Yet, what you’re seeing is little more than marketing trickery—and it’s especially common with today’s cosmetics and personal care products.

Essentially, when you stroll down the skincare aisle looking for those magic words, like “paraben-free,” “natural,” and “organic” on a product label, you may think you’ve hit the jackpot of clean beauty. But when you flip those packages over, you’re likely to find a laundry list of synthetic ingredients lurking beneath the surface, including fragrances, sodium laurel sulfate, polyethylene glycol (JPEGs), and many others. That’s greenwashing.

What makes this practice especially concerning is the fact that the average woman uses nine different personal care products daily, exposing herself to a cocktail of up to 126 different chemicals. Some of these include endocrine disrupters, neurotoxins, and even potential carcinogens. Since your skin literally “drinks in” whatever you put on it, avoiding questionable chemicals is extremely important.

A better way to protect yourself against greenwashing is to scan actual ingredient labels. You especially want to look for the 10 worst-of-the-worst offending ingredients—such as alpha and beta hydroxy acids, PFA’s, and PEG’s—which you can commonly find on many big brand and “poser organic” skin products. Plus, you want to be wary of products that use terms like “organic” or “wild-crafted” to give the impression of safety and purity, when in fact only a few ingredients are organic and safe. In fact, seeing this seal on a product label is the only way to know a product in the US is truly organic and it's the best way to ensure a product is safe.

Check the Ingredients in Your Laundry Detergent…You Might Be Shocked

Do you ever wonder what lurks in the suds that clean your clothes? The scary reality is that most are loaded with highly poisonous chemicals like chlorine, ammonia, and other toxins…which can not only cause rashes and irritate your skin but wreak havoc on your endocrine and immune systems. Plus, many of them contain toxic chemicals like Triclosan, which could even make you gain weight.

As the washing machine churns, these chemicals sneak into the fibers of your clothes. Then, they slowly seep into the largest organ of your body: Your skin! The worst part? This may lead to 24/7 exposure to toxins.

That’s why Truly Free developed a non-toxic, super-powerful detergent…one that’s free of harsh, skin-irritating chemicals. Instead, it uses mill salts and plant-based cleansing ingredients (100% vegan), which will give you crisp and clean clothes, free from stains and chemicals. Plus, your clothes will smell as fresh as a spring day and be fluffy and soft to the touch.

Feelings of Anger May Impair Your Blood Vessels

We often talk about how anger raises our blood pressure, but did you know this emotion can actually impair your blood vessels? Researchers had study participants recall memories that made them anxious, sad, or angry—then examined the cells that lined each participant’s blood vessels. What they found is that anger impaired blood vessel dilation for up to 40 minutes, yet there were no changes after recalling sad or anxious memories. (More)

Could Acid Reflux Medications Trigger Migraines?

If you're using acid reflux-reducing medications and experiencing migraines, you're not alone. A recent study examined data from 11,818 participants regarding their usage of acid-reducing drugs and their occurrence of migraines or severe headaches. The findings revealed that those who used acid-reducing drugs were more likely to suffer from migraines or severe headaches. The strongest association was observed with proton pump inhibitors, followed by H2 blockers and generic antacids. If you're on any of these medications and experiencing headaches, it's advisable to consult your physician. (More)

Can Drinking Lead to Long-Term Memory Issues?

Most people know drinking alcohol can promote a feeling of relaxation and that heavy alcohol consumption causes short-term cognitive impairments—both of which usually resolve after you sober up. Yet, experts have found that heavy drinking over time can boost the risk of dementia and other memory-related health issues down the road. The association between alcohol and brain health, however, is complex and there are several factors at play, including the type of alcohol you’re consuming. (More)

Don’t Overlook This Ovarian Cancer Symptom

Unfortunately, there isn’t a regular screening for ovarian cancer, so it’s important to pay attention to how you feel. One symptom of ovarian cancer can include pain in your stomach, which can cause your stomach to become distended. It can also be accompanied by a loss of appetite, indigestion, fatigue back pain, and constipation, as well as shortness of breath. While these symptoms don’t automatically signal cancer, if you’re experiencing them, it’s important to get it checked out. (More)
